  1. 1. This quote could possibly mean that the devil and any evil thought can take a shape that hits the soft spot of one's brain and lure that person into giving up their humanity and doing the most evil things, just as the three witches have done to Macbeth.
    2. Hecate and the three witches are the devils in this play. They first told Macbeth about how he could earn the title of Thane of Cawdor and king. They used sweet-talking to seduce him into believing that it was possible, and put Macbeth into the mental state where he thoroughly believes he has to control fate and nothing will come by coincidence.
    3. The pleasing shape the devil has created is power, security, and the position as thane of Glamis, Cawdor, and king of Scotland. What the devil had in this deal was murder. Cruel, bloody murder hiding behind all the objects Macbeth has ambition for.
    4. Banquo, Duncan, and Macduff seem to be the only forms of good in this play. Unfortunately, Banquo is dead, Duncan is dead, and Macduff is in Macbeth's cross-hairs. Because of that, the evil of murder and mistrust will dominate all those who've shown themselves to be good in this play.

  3. 1. This quote has many possibilities for its meaning, but to me its stating that the devil has powers to take the shape of any form of sin.It can lure you to take the wrong path in your life, without you realizing what you've done until its to late. It can also make you feel at that very moment like your doing the right thing. For example, by taking the shape of money people can become very greedy and think of themselves rather then giving it to a homeless person outside. At the time they feel like its a great choice, but later they will realize what they have done.

2.In the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth played the role as the devil. She convinced Macbeth to commit to evil and get him in the habit of it, rather then accepting that the times will come for him to be King. But as the play developed, Macbeth has truly become the role of the devil. He first started off by killing Duncan, then his best friends, and finally he decided that it was ok to kill women and children! He has turned into a savage beast, much like Jack did when stranded on the island.

3.In my opinion, nothing in this play has so much as resembled good! So far blood piled upon blood has occurred. In the final act though, I have a feeling Macbeth will be revenged by Macduff which in its own way is good. By killing Macbeth, evil will lower a level, and the Crown will go to its rightful owner. Macbeth should remember that when playing with fire, you get burned.

  4. I think it is saying that the devil can be anywhere, and in everyone. It's saying that there is a bit of the devil in everyone, but the devil can be more present in others, and the evil will be most present in whoever it wants to be in.

Everyone in Macbeth seems to be somewhat evil. But I think, in the beginning, the devil is truly in Lady Macbeth. She convinces Macbeth to be evil. However, the spirit of the devil moves to Macbeth later in the play.He is obsessed with killing, and probably won't stop. (But, if you think about it, it's possible Macbeth would not be evil without Lady Macbeth telling him to. Or maybe he was always evil and Lady Macbeth just brought it out. Not sure.)

This whole play basically revolves around evil. Evil is caused mainly by the power in this piece . Macbeth wants power, and he will do anything to get it. Evil also is in guilt. Guilt and power go hand in hand. Power provokes the need to kill, hurt, damage, etc. and guilt comes afterwards to torment the mind, which, in this case, just causes more evil.

I think all of Macbeth's murder victims were the good in the play. Sadly, that does not last, because the would not be called Macbeth's murder victims otherwise. In the end, I do not think good or evil will occur. I believe that Macbeth will die somehow, (insanity/suicide/murder)which would be good, but I do not really see a nice happy ending here.

  5. This quote can mean many things. I think that it is talking about how the devil can enter into someone and cause them to do wrong things. The devil can take any shape it wants, as long as that person or thing is okay with that.

I think that many people are evil in Macbeth. I think that Lady Macbeth is truly evil, because she convinces Macbeth to kill the king first, and she sparks his act of killing. After he kills the king, he can no longer control his emotions and goes on a killing spree. Macbeth can also be classified as evil because he does kill so many people and he can't control himself and his actions. Lady Macbeth also started this though, so she could have brought it out in him.

The evil so far in this play has taken shape in people. Macbeth can be seen as evil because he does kill Duncan, Banquo, and Macduff's wife and son. This play revolves around evil. Every scene has some sort of evil act or thought occurring. Shakespeare has the characters focused on evil deeds, so the tone and atmosphere of the entire play is evil and what evil will be done next.

I think that Macduff is good. He is suspicious of Macbeth and he believes that the king didn't deserve to die. He wants to fight Macbeth and has prepared an army to do that. Macduff represents good. I think that good will overcome at the end. Knowing that Macbeth is a tragic hero, I know that he will die. He represents all that is bad in this play, so when he dies I think that the good will triumph and everything will turn out alright at the end.

  6. The above quote says that devil that exists in your personal world takes on a form that you would least expect it to come as. You don’t think that that the people or things that you find nice and pleasurable could posses such an evil demeanor. I think this quote also says that the people around you that you trust most are the ones that may be most likely to be a devil

There are multiple devil characters in Macbeth. The first one I see is Lady Macbeth. She is not necessarily a devil in act 1, but she is the one who convinced Macbeth to murder his own king for his and her benefit. Another devil I find is Hecate. She seems to me like she just makes peoples life miserable because she can; also she states that because “was never called to bear my part, or show the glory of our art” in other words the witches didn’t invite her to give Macbeth his prophecy so now she is going to take it out on Macbeth.

The evil I recognize the best, is the evil between Macbeth and the rest of Scotland. He has taken so much from the people around him for personal gain only to realize later that it isn’t enough, so he needs more. Macbeth has murdered the king thinking it would be easy as that to get the throne but after that he knows that to keep the throne he has to kill his best friend and his son. After that it is a chain reaction of events, he goes to the witches for help but only ends up greedy for them to tell him what he wants to know. The pleasing shape that this evil ha taken on is in the shape of Macbeth as king, a king is someone who protects the country and thinks about his people. Macbeth is doing just the opposite.

Unlike what I said before I think that the witches posses some type of decency because they have realized that Macbeth isn’t the selfless king people think he is. Hecate says “worse you, all you have done hath been but for a wayward son” or why help this man he is only a stubborn brat? So Hecate goes to try to stop Macbeth from doing all this harm to Scotland.

  7. This quote is saying that things that you know are wrong can have a good appeal. For example, Macbeth knows that killing Duncan is wrong, but he knows that if he does it he will become king. He didn’t want to kill Duncan, but he wanted to become king more.

In Macbeth, there are several devils. Lady Macbeth plays the role of the devil when she pushes Macbeth to kill Duncan. She starts him on the path of bloodshed. The three witches are devils when they tell Macbeth his future. In doing this, they hoped to create chaos and confusion. They started Macbeth’s thoughts of power and ambition.

Killing Duncan was evil but it appealed to Macbeth because then he had a chance to become king. Killing Fleance and Banquo also was evil, but Macbeth wanted to do it because he wanted to remain king. As king, Macbeth has become more evil because now he doesn’t even hesitate to kill women and children.

I think that both Lennox and Macduff are good. They recognize that the killing is wrong and try to distance themselves from it and to stop Macbeth. I think that both good and evil will triumph at the end of the play. Evil will triumph because the witches will have succeeded in creating chaos and confusion. Good will triumph because I think that Macduff will save the kingdom from Macbeth.

  8. I think that what the quote means is that the devil can be anyone, even the people you might least expect. It also means that the devil can come at you in more ways than one.

I feel that the three witches have taken the form of the devil because they are always playing with Macbeth mentally to cause confusion and trouble. I also think that Lady Macbeth could be the devil because she is the one who triggered Macbeth. If it had not been for her nagging to kill King Duncan, then perhaps Macbeth would not have been in partaking in so many murders.

The evil so far has taken its form in the whole plot of Macbeth. Throughout the play, murder, deception, and jealousy have been constants factors to the plot. Each factor, has its own set of evils and wrong doing that contributes to the twisted plot. Evil is throughout Macbeth and there is no way to go around it.

I think that so far, nothing good has been done. All there has been is the shedding of blood. However, I feel that in the end, some sort of justice will prevail. Somehow Macbeth will get what he deserves and Scotland will be saved from more "mysterious" muders.

  9. “The devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape”
The above quote explains that the devil can transform or morph into anything. That means the devil could become a person, a snake, a tree; the devil could become anything he wants to be. The devil transfers from one person to the next in Shakespeare. He is always present in the witches but a little part of him exists in Lady Macbeth. The devil realizes that just persuading Macbeth in the form of Lady Macbeth is not enough to cause trouble. The devil leaves Lady Macbeth and moves on to Macbeth. Macbeth then becomes a different person, one who is blood thirsty and ruthless. The devil creates Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to commit the greatest evil, murder. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth don’t commit murder once, but multiple times. Macbeth isn’t a book filled with evil characters; there are decent characters in Macbeth like King Duncan, Banquo, Fleance, Macduff, and others. The bad thing is that all of the well-minded characters end up getting killed by the evil characters. The only hope is Macduff, who hasn’t been murdered yet and is raising an army to defeat Macbeth. I believe good will always triumph evil; but with Shakespeare, anything is possible.

  10. “The devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape.” (Shakespeare Hamlet)
I interpret this quote by that it is saying that the devil will form into whatever image it needs to tempt you.
I think that Macbeth is the devil in the play or the greed that Macbeth has is the devil. At first I think that Lady Macbeth could be another devil because she is the one that originally tempts Macbeth to kill King Duncan. But as the play progresses Lady Macbeth seems to play a more innocent character. For example she has no influence in the killing of Macbeth or Macduff’s wife and son. Macbeth definitely is his own devil he talks himself into killing all the people he does. The witches play a part in Macbeth being his own devil because they plant the ideas of power and greed into him head although it is Macbeth who executes the deeds.
Evil that has occurred in the play so far is all the murders that have been happening. The evil has been surrounding Macbeth mostly. The pleasing shapes that the devil has taken in the play are King Duncan’s crown and scepter. These items have tempted Macbeth to originally start the killings that he did and they are the reason why he continues to kill. There have been little spurts of good in the play. Like when Banquo and Macduff’s son show love to their family members by warning them to run from the murders. Other acts that may be perceived as good may be that Malcom and Macduff are going to rise up against Macbeth.
Good is usually the one that triumphs in the end, but this play seems pretty dark so I am going to assume that sadly evil triumphs in the end. I think that evil has now or almost completely taken over Macbeth. Evil spreads so I am going to guess that by the end of the play Macbeth won’t be the only person going on crazy manhunts to kill a foe.

  11. I would interpret the quote as the devil has the ability to make someone believe that they are in control and that the environment that they are in has no danger. The devil can seem to play tricks on your mind that make your actions seem just and right, but truly, it is still the evil of the devil working.

I think that Lady Macbeth and the witches are posing as devils in a sense because they are "tricking" Macbeth into doing evil acts that are resented by the common person. Lady Macbeth persuaded Macbeth to kill Duncan and the witches cast spells on Macbeth to make him believe that the actions he was taking were for the good of the kingdom and would improve Macbeth as a person.

Both the murders of Duncan and Banquo are evil occurances in the play so far. The murders are taking on a pleasing shape to Macbeth because he is feeling that more killing will get him more power, and that in turn will result in fewer chances of him dying before his kin can take over the throne.

Lady Macbeth tried to take a step into decency in the play when she excused the guests to leave when Macbeth was seeing the apparition. However, this is the only time decency or goodness is shown in the play so far because she tried to protect the guests and the kingship of the Macbeth family. I predict the downfall of Macbeth and the triumph of the fleeing lords and sons of the king because in every book or play ever created, only the good can prevail; and Macbeth cannot win with such a massive army attacking his small scottish army, for their force would be too great.

  12. If I had to explain this quote to a friend, I might translate it into something like, "Evil forces can change themselves into a tempting, and appealing form according to each individual, including people, objects, possessions, environments, etc.
I believe everyone is a devil in Macbeth. This point was made in Lord of the Flies, but every human has evil inside of them, a "beast", that they cannot hide all the time.
Evil has occurred in all sorts of forms here. First it came through the witches by confusing both Macbeth and banquo. Second, it came through Lady macbeth as she persuaded her husband to commit a murder. It is coming through Macbeth as he walks on the path of murder and despair. It appeals through making people believe they can have what they can't. Evil comes through hallucinations, like the dagger with it's handle towards Macbeth.
There is absolutely no decency in this play so far. Even when Macbeth and his wife "look the innocent flower," they are really the "serpents underneath it." A thirst for power from Macbeth and his wife corrupt the kingdom. This makes me think of a question I have. Does Lady Macbeth expect to gain something out of her husband being King because she hasn't mentioned anything about a desire to be Queen, yet she is eager to get her husband to the throne. I think the play will start and end horribly, and without decency. The play is categorized as a tragedy, therefore I highly doubt it will have a fairy tale "Happily ever after."

  13. I think the quote means that the devil can be inside things that may seem so great and good. It can lurk in the hidden shadows and trick people into believing that it is good and right, but in reality it is the exact opposite of what it is taking the shape of.

There are many devils in Macbeth but the main devil that I can pick out is Lady Macbeth. Without her insistant urging and constant reminder for Macbeth to be a "man", the story would be follwing a completely different course. Lady Macbeth is the on that springs Macbeth into action and once he is in action by murdering, he can not stop. He has a bubbling rage inside of him that is always coaxing him to kill.

The evil that has been presented in this play so far is of the worst kind, murder. Murder is a horrible crime that you can never take back. Macbeth has done many things that he would be severially punished for if he were not the king. The pleasing shape the devil has taken for Macbeth is him thinking that he will gain more power by committing these murders and be safe from all of the men that will rebel against him.

There has been good in this play so far. We see love and freindship between families such as Banquo's and Macduff's. We see the desire for good from the king of England and Malcolm. There is potential for good and peace but with Mabeth resting on the thrown, no mercy will be given. I think that good will win in the end because Macbeth will die since he is a tragic hero and the thrown will be given back to the rightful heir and all will end with a happy conclsion.

  14. What I interprete from this quote is that the devil can morph into pleasing shapes and cause people to fall for it's horrible tricks. The devil can create a sense of trust among someone and make them hear what they want to hear only to end in some kind of chaos. Chaos and confusion is what the devil wants and likes.

In Macbeth, the three witches trick Macbeth by telling him what he wants to hear, but soon enough, there is trouble brewing in the air. The three witches are the devils of the story, who can change someone's idea about one thing or another. Macbeth, didn't know that he would be king, but as soon as the witches told him, he was destined to do anything in his power to get what they had told him he was going to get.

There is a lot of evil that has taken place in the play so far. At first, the three witches appear to be the only obvious culprits of evil, but as the story progresses, Macbeth becomes more distinguished as an evil character. After the stabbing of King Duncan, they apparition of the knife appears in front of Macbeth as a reminder of the evil that has taken place. The evil took the shape of a knife in the story to help make Macbeth more and more paranoid and terrified.

Even though there is little, there is some decency in the play so far. Macduff has fled to England to round up an army to try and stop Macbeth before he goes any farther. He is trying to stop evil by being good and reasonable. In the end. I think that good will triumph over evil, because when Macduff eventually collects an army, Macbeth and his wife will not be able to fight against all of those people, and finally evil will stoping ruling Scotland once and for all.

  15. I think that this quote is saying that the devil can come in any form, especially one that is pleasing to you. When it is in a form that is pleasing to you, then it can more easily lure you into sinning.

There are a few devils in Macbeth, but I think the main one is Lady Macbeth. She tells Macbeth to kill Duncan in order to kill the king, and if he doesn't, then he isn't a man. Because of this, Macbeth start a cycle of killing that he cannot stop. The other devil in the story would be the three witches. They coax him into believing that he is unstoppable, and he becomes very over confident, which leads to his ultimate demise.

In this play, evil has taking the form of macbeth and his acts. He kills many people because he thinks that he will gain power from it, and that he will not be killed because he has killed everyone that is rebelling against him.

People like Macduff and Banquo are good. Malcolm and the king of england are also good because they wast to give the throne to the rightful king, and not have Scotland in the control of macbeth. I think that in the end, good will triumph ad it usually does. Macbeth will be killed and the throne will be given back to the rightful king; Malcolm.

  16. I interpret this quote to be saying that the devil can take any shape or form of your desires. It can take over one's sense of what is right or wrong and lead them to believe what they're doing is correct. It takes the form of your strongest desire and can lead you astray.
I believe that the obvious answer as to whom the devil is played by would be the three witches and Hecate, however everybody seems to play part of the devil at some point. Lady Macbeth was the devil when she was convincing Macbeth that the murder of Duncan would be good, Macbeth when he hire murderers to kill his good friend Banquo. Or when the witches told Macbeth that he was destined to be king but purposely gave no hint as to what he had to do to get to that position.
The evil in the play so far seems to have taken the shape of the desire for power. Macbeth has fallen under this evil and has let greed take over his senses. It has taken over his mind and has clouded his sense of good and bad so he has little control over what he is doing. The evil also seems to take the shape of death. Through murder. And when the greed for power runs into murder nothing good can occur from it.
I don't feel as though there is much good in this play. Some of the characters such as Duncan and MacDuff have done good things. Duncan was just trying to rule his country when Macbeth ran in to murder him. MacDuff followed Malcom to England to find an army to help Macbeth out of the hole he's dug and try to save the country befor Macbeth ruins all that's been created there. To me those are the few exeptions to an otherwise gruesome and cruel play.

  17. I would interpret this quote as saying that even the most seemingly innocent or purely beneficial aspects of life can actually turn out to be a harmful influence. As a matter of fact, evil is more effective in this form, as one is less suspecting of it.
Rather than a who, it is a WHAT that is playing the role of the devil in Macbeth. The notion of power and fate bring irrevocable damage to the characters of Macbeth and his wife. They send the once noble couple into the spiraling depths of greed and paranoia by making them obsessed with the ideal of great prosperity.
The evil of the play is the numerous murders that occur due to the desire of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, some of which are not necessary. However, these two individuals are blind to their sins, as they see it simply as an opportunity to obtain fame, fortunes, and anything else they desire.
So far, I would say that nothing has been intentionally done solely for the purpose of being good. Even the seemingly "good" characters like Macduff and Malcolm have only done what they have done out of selfishness, because they feel like Macbeth stole something from them. In the end, I am sure that good will prevail over evil. Using prior knowledge about Shakespeare's intentions, I know that the message of the play was to spur social awareness, and an implication that greed and murder are not beneficial would naturally be the perfect "moral" of the story.

  18. I think this quote means that the devil and evil can appear in anybody or anything. It can be portrayed as something positive, sucking people into evil situations. What first may seem like a great idea to get what you want can have very negative outcome through the trust and consequences that come with the actions.

Many people could be considered the devil in some way. Lady Macbeth fueled the fire, starting off the commotion by coming up with the plan to first Murder King Duncan. The devil in her set off Macbeth who is now responsible for several murders. The three witches have also taken the form of the devil as they cause confusion and trouble by playing with Macbeth's mental state.

The evil so far has taken shape through the different characters and their actions. Lady Macbeth's intentions and planning and Macbeth's goal to have power create evil all throughout the play. The first murder of King Duncan triggers more evil as greed increases and tension grows between everyone.

I feel evil has taken over a lot of the aspects of Macbeth but there is still some good in those such as MacDuff. MacDuff is trying to create an army to try and stop the evil that Macbeth is bringing. Duncan never did anything that really stood out as evil. His murder was because of Macbeth's and Lady Macbeth's struggle for power.

  19. 1. I think that this quote means that the devil can control people and cause them to do things that the devil takes joy in.

    2. I believe that there are many devils in Macbeth. I think that Lady Macbeth is one because she was controlling Macbeth by challenging his man hood in order to get him to kill Duncan. Macbeth is also a devil because he has the thought “I have to kill in order to keep my position,” in his head. I think the witches and Hecate are also devils because their prophecy is the cause for all the deaths that have happened.

    3. I think that the murders of Duncan and Banquo are the evil that have happened in the play so far. The murders are taking on a pleasing shape to Macbeth because he thinks that more killing will get him more power, and that will result in fewer chances of him dying before his children can take the crown.

    4. I think that even though there is very little good, there is some in the play so far. Macduff is suspicious of Macbeth and has fled to England to round up an army to try and stop Macbeth before any more murders happen. Macduff is trying to stop evil by being good and reasonable. In the end, I think that good will triumph over evil, because if Macduff conjures up an army, Macbeth and his wife will not be able to fight back, and Macbeth will be overthrown.

  20. This quote is saying that the devil and any other type of evil can take any shape or form of your desires to get you to do sin full stuff you normally wouldn't do. It can lure you into doing things that can change your life without you knowing it. The evil takes the form of your greatest desire to make you do something wrong when you think it's correct.
The devil and evil has taken the form of the three witches, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The three witches told Macbeth of his future of being Thane of Cawdor and king. Putting this thought of having so much power put him in this mental state were he doesn't know what's wrong or right so he kills Duncan. Then when Macbeth fills that Banquo could threaten his reign as king he turns into the devil himself and desides kills him to. Last but not least Lady Macbeth was the devil when she sweet talked Macbeth into going against his morals and killing Duncan.
The desired shape that evil has taken on so far is power, security, and opportunity. In these shapes evil has spurred Macbeth to murder Duncan, his best friend Banquo and Macduff's kid. As power and security are threatened the people who threaten them die and as new opportunities arise characters go to extremes to aquire them.
So far in the play I would say that Banquo, Macduff and Duncan are the good so far. Although Macbeth has already killed Duncan and Banquo and he now has his eyes on Macduff I think that good will triumph in the end. I believe that with Macduff forming an army in England and Macbeth becoming more and more sadistic and overconfident in time his empire will crumble and Malcom will be king of Scotland.

  21. In my opinion, there is generally one interpretation that everyone tends to share about the quote, “The devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape” (Shakespeare. Hamlet). The devil will not appear as itself, but under the form of an overlap of evil. It is like a parasite to a being with symptoms of corruption; it lives within and possesses a host body. The devil will show up in the most unexpected of places, because that is the most believable.
Another aspect to consider about the concepts of a devil is, that there is no “The Devil”, however there are “Devils”. There is not one, single devil. It’s more of a concept, an idea. Devilism. Obviously, there is not a specific character in Macbeth who is possessed by such a thing. It’s an idea that has been spreading throughout the course of corrupt events taking place. The more murder that is committed, the more characters in Macbeth are reborn through the devil. Lady Macbeth is definitely one of the leaders for the Devilish movement in Macbeth. She is the one who is corrupted initially. She then slowly starts to spread her ideas to others, such as her husband. He is finally convinced to put the ideas into action and he does. Soon after he feels much remorse, causing him to realize that he is only a borderline demon. The three witches and their leader Hecate are for sure a by-product of the devil, Lady Macbeth, and Macbeth. Constantly, they put forth their most eager effort to motivate Macbeth to accentuate his hints of corruption through action.

So far in Macbeth, a once innocent man has been convinced by his antithesis wife to kill: his leader, his best friend, and his best friend’s son. However, the influence has only been completed 2/3 of the way. Initially, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth, and the three
witches are pleased with the results of their work. The five each believe that they have their own successes through either: prosperity, power, or havoc. That is, until Lady Macbeth realizes that she too, has gotten blood on her hands and may be caught AND that the job isn’t finished; not everyone she wanted dead is dead. Macbeth immediately feels the regrets and paranoia of guilt. He struggles extremely with handling all of this after realizing the repercussions of power, especially the way he gained it. The three witches’ main motive for all that they do is to cause havoc. That’s all they want, drama, confusion, downfall. They are pleased with themselves until Hecate’s scolding greets them.
It would be nice to be able to believe that, yes, there is good in Macbeth. At times I’m not too sure, though. In the end, I think the theme of the play will be: Good Prevailing against Evil.

  22. 1. This quote is explaining that the wrong choice, or an act that shouldn't happen will always have pathetic excuses that convince the person. No matter how much your morals will say no, if you have an intent and want to do it, you will always find an excuse to execute the deed.
    2. There are multiple devils in this play, but the main devil that drives the characters to do things is greed. It drove Macbeth to kill Duncan and Banquo, and it also drove Lady Macbeth to create the plan for him to do so.
    3. The devil that has occurred so far in the play has been murder and greed. The pleasant form it has taken to has been Macbeth being granted kingship and Banquo's chances of his sons being king's being slimmed down by his death.
    4. The goodness that has happened so far in the story has been the suspicion of Macbeth's kingship and the saving of Banquo's son Fleance. I believe in the end good will win and Macbeth will be overthrown. This is because Macbeth is so focused on traitors and killing them to be focused on his own safety

  23. This quote means that sin, can take many forms and sometimes, it may be something that we find pleasing. For example, a lot of people consider drinking and partying to be like a sin, but it is pleasing to us and we easily fall for it. In Macbeth, there are many “devils.” They can appear in the form of vicious people, like Lady Macbeth who knows in her heart that she is evil, and murders with malice in her heart. But the most present “devil” is the one that is buried inside every man’s heart. Eventually, this evil will slip out when there is something we want and we know we can’t obtain it through honorable means. The evil that has occurred in Macbeth so far in our reading is Macbeth’s thirst for power. Being king sounds great to Macbeth, but the only way to achieve it is through bloodshed, making Macbeth almost a symbol of the devil’s power to corrupt even the best of us. I’m even willing to say that there is no decency in the play whatsoever, and while I want to believe that good will triumph in the end, I don’t think that it is likely to happen. My mom always said “a leopard never changes its spots,” meaning that people will never change. If you were born with malice in your heart, it will never go away. In Macbeth’s case, he was born with jealousy and malice in his heart, even though he never realized it until he killed King Duncan. Now that he knows that he can get what he wants through murder, he will never change and will always resort to killing.

  24. I interpret Shakespeare's quote as, the devil or any evil power can take control or morph itself into anything. This quote also says to me, that looks can be deceiving. In other words just because a certain being or existence looks pleasing or good, don't always believe what you see, for there is room for possible fooling or cheating.

In Macbeth there are definitely evil powers and devilish roles. At the beginning of the play this "devil" was played by Lady Macbeth. She was the one who convinced Macbeth that he was unmanly if he did not kill King Duncan to grasp the throne. Though as the play went on, the wretched powers reversed themselves. Macbeth became the evil figure where as Lady Macbeth mellowed out a bit. Once Macbeth started on his killing spree, he became blood thirsty and couldn't stop, this was the evil power in him.
The evil in Macbeth so far has basically shown itself through deception and bloodshed. The blood on Macbeth's hands was the recognition of the terrible act of killing King Duncan. There is so much evil throughout this play and most of it is symbolized by death.

So far there really has been a lack of "good" powers. Although, if I were to choose one I would pick the witches. This may seem like a crazy belief but even though the witches are only trying to stir up confusion, they realize that Macbeth really is the evil in the play, and with that information they do whatever they can to confuse him which eventually will lead to his downfall. By the end of the book I believe that good will triumph over evil because eventually Macbeth's ego will become so great, he will be to good for even himself.

  25. 1. I think this quote substitutes the devil, who is evil, for temptation, which can also be evil. The devil has the power to present temptation in pleasing ways, so that you desperately want to do that particular thing. Therefore, the devil/temptation can be an evil thing that disguises itself as something good.

    2. In Macbeth, I think that the three weird sisters are the devils. As the devils, they tempt Macbeth with something very pleasing to him, the promise of the king’s throne. The third witch says, “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!” (Shakespeare 1.3.51). This temptation proves to be evil as Macbeth kills many to remain king.

    3. Macbeth has gone against his morals, his country, and God by murdering King Duncan, King Duncan’s two servants, and Banquo just to hold his position as king. This evil that Macbeth has indulged in has disguised itself as the power to rule as the King of Scotland.

    4. The only good demonstrated in this play so far is the hope of Macduff gathering an army in England to defeat Macbeth’s tyrannical and murderous rule. Ultimately, I think that good will triumph because the crimes Macbeth has done are beginning to consume him. For example, Banquo’s ghost haunts him, because he feels remorse for what he has done, and he is progressively losing his sanity as is shown throughout the book. In addition, good will win because almost all the lords have turned against him, and they want to free the people from his horrible reign.

  26. This quote can be interpreted in many different ways, but I believe that it means evil things can be seen as pleasing or nice to the person, but is in fact evil. For example, the witches throughout the play are controlling Macbeth into murdering Duncan and Banquo.
The witches may possibly be the 'devils', but Lady Macbeth seemed like one also, earlier on in the book. They convinced him into believing that he would become king, so he took it into his own hands.
The pleasing shape the devil has become or created is the murders that have been committed, the need for power by Macbeth, and greed. Forms it may have taken include the power of being king, and the rewards of the murders.
Macbeth in the beginning of the play was definitely good, but over time and through the witches influence, he has become evil. Also, Duncan and Banquo were good. Unfortunately, 'evil' has murdered them. I still believe that eventually, good will win, but it won't happen soon.

  27. 1) The above quote could mean several things, however the first thing that pops into my head is that the devil, or evil in other words, can change itself into whatever it needs to in order to get to you. Depending on the situation, he can tempt a person by assuming a shape or a situation that is responding to a situation and can affect you in the most way possible. I would explain this by saying that the devil can assume the shape or form the situation accordingly to what is going on, what is around you, your personality and morals, and whatever else he can use.
    2) In Macbeth, I believe that Macbeth himself is playing somewhat of the devil. He is backstabbing everyone left and right, just after showing his loyalty to them in some form or another. However, he is not the only devil in this story. Lady Macbeth as well, is like this. She, at the beginning, controlled Macbeth and told him what to do. She would also not hesitate to kill or betray anyone.
    3) Evils that have occurred in Macbeth thus far include the murders that Macbeth has committed and done with pleasure. These have come in the form of pleasure and success resulting from these murders. Macbeth will not stop at anything or resist killing to get where he wants to go.
    4) There is not much decency in this play so far, as two of Macbeth’s close friends have been murdered by Macbeth, and it seems that everyone is getting stabbed in the back. Though it is hard to tell as of yet, I believe that at the end of the play, good will triumph over evil because Macbeth will either be so scared and sorry for what he has done that he will give himself us, or he will be found out and killed.

  28. I believe the quote “The devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape” indicates the devil will appear in a familiar form to a person. The “devil” is what a person most desires. In the case of Macbeth, he most urgently desired power and so he was tempted to murder and plot in order to obtain the throne. Macbeth completely lost all moral values and turned to the devil to get the power he wanted.

There are several devils in Macbeth. Hectate and the three witches represent devils. They told Macbeth that he could be king and convinced him of that. They intend to cause trouble and they just told Macbeth what he wanted to hear. Lady Macbeth is also a devil. In the beginning, Macbeth wasn’t a bad person. Then Lady Macbeth started convincing him to do bad things, such as killing King Duncan. She even helped him and planned the murder. Because of Hectate, the three witches, and Lady Macbeth, Macbeth is now a devil. He killed Duncan and his guards, then arranged for Banquo, Fleance, Lady Macduff and Lady Macduff’s children to be murdered.

At this point in the play the evil is the acts of sabotage and murder. The pleasing shape is power and becoming King. The witches displayed evil when they told Macbeth that he could be King. Macbeth realized the first part of the witches’ prophecy came true when it was announced he was now Thane of Cawdor, he then became emboldened to consider the possibility of murdering Duncan.

I believe Shakespeare wrote Banquo as the character representing good. Banquo was a friend to Macbeth and Banquo routinely supported Macbeth. My interpretation is Shakespeare symbolically killed the good when Banquo was murdered. I believe ultimately evil will triumph over good in Macbeth. Unless a new character representing good is introduced, I do not see how it would be possible for the evil to be overcome. Macbeth falls under the genre of tragedy, also was a clue to me. A tragedy is not known to have a happy ending.

  29. The devil is a symbol for evil. Evil can take many shapes, which takes the shape of any pleasing form. Lady Macbeth is the devil. She does anything that she needs to for her advantage. She will be the good lady when she needs to. After the killing of Duncan she pretend that it was an awful crime. “Woe alas! What, in our house?” (Shakspere 2.5.85). She was shaped as an innocent flower but as a deadly scorpion when planning the murder of Duncan. “When Duncan is asleep-his two chamberlains will I with wine and wassail so convince that memory…what cannot you an I perform upon the unguarded Duncan?” (Shakspere 1.7.61-70). So far in the play evil has been a dagger to kill Duncan, Macbeth’s hands to take the dagger, and Lady Macbeth as a good hostess. The good in this play has not exactly shown up. In the end evil will win. No one has tried to stop the murders, no one has convinced, and nothing is in the way of evil. Evil will triumph.

  30. 1. I interpret the quote "The devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape." as a way of saying that the devil possesses abilities that allow him to take on many forms, including pleasant ones. This power can lead people into committing acts that will later be regrettable, now matter how harmless it may have seemed beforehand.

    2. I don't believe a specific character in Macbeth is playing the role of the devil, but I think each character's ambition acts as the devil in this play. The witches have an ambition to cause havoc and mayhem which later leads to their prophecy of Macbeth's role as king. This invokes an ambition in Macbeth to become royalty and soon sparks his spree of murders. Lady Macbeth's ambition causes her to develop into an unstable, power-hungry woman. While ambition can be good and lead to success, the ambition seen in Macbeth leads to turmoil.

    3. The evil that has occurred in the play as of yet comes in the pleasing shape of power or, more specifically, the promise of royalty. In order to gain such power, Macbeth has murdered multiple people that are standing in his way of the throne.

    4. What little good there is in the play comes in the form of the characters murdered by Macbeth. The few that are still living at this point in the play, I believe, will be murdered towards to the end as they fight to stop Macbeth. Evil will dominate in the end, I think, although I also sense that Macbeth will regret becoming such an evil presence in the first place.

  31. I think this quote is saying that the devil can take many forms that are tempting to us, such as the temptation of power for Macbeth. I think that the main devils in this play are power, and the witches. Power is a devil because it is so tempting to Macbeth that he risks sanity friendship and loyalty to obtain it. He kills his best friend and his king, and his sanity is greatly decreasing with every action. The witches are devils because they try to cause mischief and craziness in every action. The evil in this play has taken on the shape of power. Macbeth lusts for power so much that he kills his ruler and his best friend. I don’t think that there is any decency in this play so far. I think that good will overcome evil because people fight for good.

  32. I interpret the above quote as meaning that temptation and evil can come in many different forms. Temptation may come in the form a person in one’s life or as a thing put in a place of importance. Evil has the ability to change shape, seeming harmless but actually lying in wait for the perfect time to strike.

There are several ‘devil characters’ in Macbeth. In the early acts of the play, Lady Macbeth and the Three Witches act as devil characters because they tempt the seemingly docile Macbeth to commit treason in the highest form. However, as the play progresses Macbeth himself becomes a devil character because he tempts himself and pushes himself to commit treachery and kill his closest friend.

The evil that has occurred in the play so far has been Macbeth against his fellow man. King Duncan’s murder is Macbeth’s first offense: treason, killing one’s own king. The murder of Banquo is Macbeth’s second evil: treachery, going against strong bonds, such as friendship. In both cases, the evil has taken the pleasing shape of gaining and maintaining power.

Macduff and Hecate are examples of decency in the play so far. Macduff is standing up for what he believes is right and is the first person to see that Macbeth is not honorable and does not deserve to be where he is. Hecate shows decency as well because she does not want Fleance and Banquo’s legacy to end due to the actions of Macbeth and the prompting of the three weird sisters. In the end, good will triumph over evil because Macbeth, as planned by Hecate, will become falsely secure and will cause his own downfall, and in the true sense of the phrase, be a tragic hero.

  33. My interpretation of this quote is that evil is always a bad thing, but depending on how it is portrayed, it might appear good. So even if somone commits a horrible act, the reasons why they did it might make it seem like the act wasn't that bad.

I don't think there is a specific character that plays a devil. I think that power is the devil because it leads people to do evil things. Lady Macbeth wants Macbeth to gain more power by becoming king so she convinces him to kill Duncan. Macbeth doesn't like the fact that his reign will end once he dies, so he kills Banquo (his trusted friend) and tries to kill Fleance.

The evil so far in the play is all the murders committed by Macbeth. The pleasing shape is that Macbeth keeps gaining more and more power, so he doesn't feel so bad about what he did.

I think the good in this play is Lady Macbeth and Macbeth's relationship. To me, it seems like they still act like a married couple even through everything that has happened. They usually support each other and still get into fights. It seems pretty natural to me. In the end though, evil will triumph because there is so much of it. It like a domino effect; once you start it, you can't stop it.

  34. The quote 'The devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape” is interpreted in several different ways. My interpretation is that often the thing you want most and would do anything for is the wolf in sheep's clothing. Either not as wonderful as you though it would be or cost more than you, at first, would be willing to spend- in Macbeth's case sacrificing friends and morals. In the play Macbeth, there are many “devils”, but if I were just to name a few they would be Lady Macbeth at the beginning of the play when she was forcing him to kill Duncan, and the witches who by telling Macbeth the prophecy caused him to kill many people that were his friends to continue ruling as king. The most prominent evil that took place was when Macbeth killed Duncan. He though killing Duncan was all he had to do to be “happy”, but he didn't realize all the lies and deaths that would take place after the fact just to keep his uneasy rule. The good or decent people in this play are few and far between, but I believe that Lennox and Macduff are two men who are trying to get to the bottom of all the strange events and to see to it that the perpetrator receives serious punishment. At the conclusion of the play since I know people think of Macbeth as a tragic hero, it will end with good triumphing over evil as Macbeth realizes what he has done and tries to repent.

  35. In the quote above, I visualize temptations. I realize that the devil is always trying to get me to sin. One way he can do this is through temptations such as greed, lust and many other sins. This quote is easily explained by saying that the devil is everywhere taking forms of sin, trying to make us as Christians fall into his trap so he can tear us apart.
I believe the devil in and around Macbeth is his wife. She is consistently making him sin and making wrong decisions for him. There are more devils in the play. I keep thinking of the witches as devils due to their sorcery and magic. In the bible it says those who practice sorcery are not well with Christ. Most of the evil I see occurring in the play is from murders. If I am correct there has been four murders. In my eyes and God’s eyes, murder is evil. The pleasing shape it takes on is in greed. All four murders have been inspired by greed. There is not a single ounce of decency in this play. I believe at the end good shall triumph over evil with Macduff and his gang from England triumphant over the evil Macbeth.

  36. “The devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape.” (Shakespeare Hamlet)
This quote means that what appears to be good and pure might be evil in disguise. I think Macbeth and Lady Macbeth play the role of the devil in Macbeth because they both try to be “the innocent flower” while truly being malicious. For example, Macbeth continues to kill people and hurt others, but most people see him as a heroic king. Macduff is the antithesis of Macbeth. He goes to England to bring together an army and followers to help overthrow the evil ruling over Scotland. I think at the end of the play, good will triumph over evil.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I believe that this quote is saying that the devil (or evil) can disguise itself as something nice, harmless, or innocent. In other words, evil does not necessarily always look like evil. Evil can show itself in seemingly harmless forms, like Lady Macbeth. A respectable woman is not likely to be thought of as capable of smearing blood on innocent men's faces, is she?

In Macbeth, I do not believe that the devil is one definite character. Of course, the three witches would be easily identified as the "devils" of Macbeth, and they very well may be some of them. However, I believe that almost every character so far in Macbeth has a small touch of the "devil" in them. Certainly Lady Macbeth and Macbeth alternate this role, as does the murderers,Hecate, and even Lennox. I would say that so far only Duncan, Banquo, and Fleance are the only characters who have done no bad deed.

There are plenty of evils in Macbeth so far, and most of them do have a pleasing shape. The biggest evil so far has defiantly been the murder of Duncan by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. This evil was seen somewhat as a good thing by the married murderers, as it put Macbeth in as King and Lady Macbeth in the position of Queen. The evil of Macbeth and his wife was masked by their roles in Duncan's eyes: Macbeth was his hero who bravely defended Duncan, and Lady Macbeth was his kind wife who was playing the gracious hostess.

I do think that among all of the evil in Macbeth, there are some instances in which we can see good or decency. I also believe that Macduff is an example of decency. He knows that Macbeth has committed murder and is oppressing the people of Scotland, and he wants to stand up to him and what he believes in. I believe that in Macbeth, good will triumph in the end. Macbeth is a tragedy, meaning that the tragic hero (Macbeth) will rise to power and then fall, which most likely means that he will die and become a symbol of good triumphing over evil. Also, Macbeth represents Scotland, and this play was written for King James of England. As Macbeth will battle with England, I would assume that England would win, because this was written and performed in England and I do not think that a play showing the defeat of England would be very popular!

  38. 1. I interpret this quote in a way that the devil has the power to take control of someone's body. It can get inside of their head and control what actions they choose to take. The devil lures and tempts its victim to fulfill the deeds it wishes upon them.

    2. To me, Lady Macbeth is playing the role of the devil in this play. It seems like Macbeth is just the symbol of the victim in the play. Lady Macbeth used her persuasive abilities to convince Macbeth to kill the king. If it wasn't for Lady Macbeth, Macbeth most likely never would have murdered King Duncan. Lady Macbeth represents the actual devil in my mind, whereas Macbeth is just kind of the person being played and controlled by the devil.

3.In my mind, everything that has occurred in the play so far has been evil. Between all the murders, the well thought out schemes, and the prophecies of the witches, I just have trouble seeing anything but evil. King Duncan's murder was obviously the main showing of evil, however in my mind, the murder of Banquo was the most cold-blooded showing of evil. The evil has taken shape as power and desire in this play. It seems to me like nobody cares about anything except for their greed and overwhelming desire for power. For example, Macbeth murdered his best friend just to be sure his spot on the throne remains.

    4. The only current good I can spot in this play, is Macduff. He is one of the only people realizing the corruption and evil in the society. I believe that Macduff will try as hard as he can to overcome the evil and greed in the society, but in the end I believe that evil will prevail over all else.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I would explain this quote by saying that bad things are happening too often now for Macbeth. He has done so many evil things that I would say that he likes to kill people and he likes being a traitor. I would say that there are two devils in this play. Lady Macbeth is one of them because she really wants the power and will do anything to get the power she wants. And I would say Macbeth is a devil because he is so consumed in evil that he has almost taken the shape of the devil we all know and fear. The evil is all of the killing. Macbeth just keeps on killing his friends and family. I think the pleasing shape is the witches giving him so much overconfidence that he is super happy thinking that nobody can defeat him. There is some good. The people who are loyal to the king like Macduff and other thains are the good people in this play. Macduff wants to set things straight and make evil see the light of god’s goodness.

    ReplyDelete
  40. This quote has only one meaning to me. People always find excuses for evil they commit. It states that the devil, representing evil, can be good in our eyes, but is morally wrong. In Lord of the Flies for example, Piggy attempts to shift blame from him and Ralph after Simon’s murder. He yells that the darkness, or the storm, were the reasons that they thought Simon was the beast.
The devil is evil. This is the one and only thing that the devil could represent in any situation. Therefore, I believe there is only one devil in the story. The fact that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth try to excuse themselves of the murders is evidence enough that the devil is present in them both.
The evil that has taken place is all of the murders being committed. Although Lady Macbeth has stopped her plotting, Macbeth continues on in a bloodthirsty rage. The murders of Banquo and Macduff’s families show this. Macbeth has tried to shift the blame from himself by wishing that they will go to heaven, or that he has already gone too far to stop. He explains the reasoning to himself, it is pleasing to him, but to no one else.
There has been no good in the play so far, in my opinion. In the end however, I believe that good will triumph. The fact that there has been nothing but evil in the story so far is proof enough. Macbeth and his cohorts are the antagonists in my opinion. Experts and other readers may argue that it was Lady Macbeth that set him off in the first place, but I believe he is evil through and through. Good must defeat him in the end, for he is a great evil.

  41. Devil Hath Power
“The devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape.” (Shakespeare Hamlet)
    1. How do you interpret the above quote? In other words, how would you explain its message to someone else?

I believe that the quote above is saying that the devil can be misleading and look as if it is something good. The devil can be bad desires, evil thoughts, or something that can lead you to make bad or selfish decisions.
    2. Who is playing the role of the devil in Macbeth? Are there several devils in this play? Briefly explain and support your answer.

I would definitely say the three witches are playing the role of the devil in the play. They trick and manipulate Macbeth into thinking what he is doing is right and they also lead him to think that what he is doing is ok and doing more of it won’t harm him or anyone else.
    3. Describe the evil that has occurred in the play so far. What is the pleasing shape it has taken on?

The murders. Macbeth has been told that committing all this treachery and murder will lead him to being the king and living a happy life, which in fact it really will not.

    4. Is there any good or decency in this play so far? Which do you think will triumph at the end of the play-good or evil? Briefly explain your response.

I think there has been some good. Macbeth has regretted his actions but the way he has continued on as he thinks he is “to far in to stop” is very bad. I think that good will triumph in the end and Macbeth will be found out and punished for his crimes. I think that this will be a good thing for Macbeth and he will finally be happy to have his mind put to peace.

  42. 1) The quote to me means that it is sometimes easier to do evil than good. THe short term gain or pleasure is sometimes to tempting for people to pass up. Sin is like smoking when you start its hard to stop because the consequeses are long term. When the devil takes a shape that it pleasing to you personally then it is hard to pass it up. When the devil is represented in a person close to you or that you look up to it is hard to turn down the offer of sin.
2)In Macbeth I think that Lady Macbeth and the Witches are representing the devil. Lady Macbeth conviced Macbeth kill King Duncan and since that point the devil in Lady Macbeth has manifested its self inside Macbeth explaining his impulisve actions to kill. The witches have also played a big part in Macbeths personality transformation. They have made him paranoid and agin compules to kill.
3)THe evil that has taken place is Macbeths actions and the actions of the murderers. Killing DUncan took on the shape of Macbeth becomeing King and that is his ultimate goal. THe murderers killing Banquo was for revenge. Macbeth convinced them that they were living in poverty because of Banquo so they were seeking revenge.
4)I dont think that there is alot of good so far but i believe that in the end good will triumph over evil.

  43. 1}I think the quote portrays that the devil can take shape or be found in different things and in different people. The devil is supposed to give you an offer that you can't resist. It works in demonic ways and will manipulate you in the end. I think that by saying the devil can be in pleasing shapes, it's saying that it can be a characteristic of different people or things.
2)I think Macbeth himself is the main devil in this piece of literature. But if there had to be two, I definitely think that Lady Macbeth would be the second Devil, or the minion at least. Macbeth is able to take the lead after his first kill, and his hands are forever tainted. Lady Macbeth is kind of like a groupie of Macbeth and she is willing to encourage and protect him in any way possible.
    3) The reigning evil in the play so far is definitely the blood lust and what it has done to him in order for him to gain power. I think that because it would be such an extraordinary addition for Macbeth and his power, he cannot help but pass up making a deal with the devil and killing for it.
    4) Yes, the good and the descent are Macduff and his family. Also, Banquos' son Fleance. I believe that because Macbeth is a tragic hero, the good will reign. I also think that Fleance will rise to the throne at the end just like the prophecy foretold.

  44. 1. The above quote can mean two things in my mind; therefore I would explain it in two different ways. It can mean that the devil, evil, can take any kind of shape that it pleases. It can strike anywhere, or any time. The other thing that it can mean is that the devil, depending on the “shape” that he comes in can be pleasing to different people. It might almost a bribe as we saw with Macbeth; the evil was the murder but the “bribe” for Macbeth was the thought of becoming King.

    2. I think that almost every character has been bribed and fallen for the devil in this book so it looks like there are many devils. But if you think about it, all of the evil comes from one individual. It’s not the Weird Sisters, but the Goddess they get their power from. It would be Hecate even though she is not the one causing the evil (the witches), she is the one who gives the witches their powers.

    3. The only main evil that has occurred in this play so far is the desire for power because it leads to other major evil, MURDER! (Eee, Eee, Eee, Eee!) The pleasing shape that evil has taken on is almost the seduction part of killing, the part that one would become ruler and have so much wealth.

    4. Yes there has been good in this play so far. The others who are joining on Ireland and England are the glimmer of hope and goodness in this story. This reminds me of a quote my Mom once told me; “Evil only prevails if good man does nothing.” I believe that at the end of the play good will triumph because our “faint glimmer of hope” is brewing and preparing for war against Macbeth.

  45. The devil can become something that can tempt humans easily, such as money or power. It also could be using the devil as a symbol of the darkness that is in everyone. I believe that there are various "devils" in Macbeth First off, there is Macbeth's own ambition that tempts him to just do more and that nothing is good enough. There are the witches who tell Macbeth that he will become King which starts his moral downfall that we see in the second half of the book. Finally, there is Lady Macbeth who is the beautiful wife of Macbeth. She tempts him into killing Duncan, which also starts the chain reaction that we see later on in the book. The pleasing shape that the "devil" has taken is power. Macbeth wants power which will give him fame, fortune, recognition, and will make him a leader of the people of Scotland. It turns out that the power destroys him causing him to murder Duncan, Banquo, Fleance, Lady Macduff, and Macduff's child. I feel like the only good or decency from this play come from Banquo, Macduff, and Duncan. Each are "pure" and are nice to Macbeth but 2 of them get murdered and Macduff's wife and child get murdered. Because this is a tragedy I believe that corruption will triumph over being good, at least for Macbeth.
