Scribe 4/27/12 Period 5

Well, It's Friday, so everyone was really happy to say "Hello Smith"! Sort of (cause it was creeping closer and closer to the assembly).

Since we had an assembly today, classes were shorter, so we got right to work.

We started off the class by going over all of the homework due on Monday, but I will mention that later at the end of my scribe.

Then, the class watched a video which is an example of a Pecha Kucha, with Daniel Pink. Here is the link. A summary of the video is that people all the time use empathy on signs on the sides of streets and in parks to make people obey them in a secret way.

After talking about the video, everyone in the class shared their examples of symphony. Here are a few of the things people brought in:

• a rubik's cube
• Where's Waldo book
• pictures of images with negative space in them   
• peanut butter and jelly
• chocolate cake recipe
• puzzles
• and Shel Silverstein poems

Then, the class turned to pages 177 and 178 in A Whole New Mind and took the two quizzes: Empathy Quotient, and Spot the Fake Smile.

Finally, our Homework:

• Post a question for Daniel Pink's Skype on the class blog as a comment on Mrs. Smith's post.
• Blog #7 on your own TED Talk video is due Monday
• Read Empathy and Play in AWNM by May 7th

Today is the Spring Pep Assembly, so classes are a little shorter

Today was a pretty laid back day in English. We shared our symphony examples. Some were very interesting like:

Scribe 4-26-12 Period 5

We came to the room set up for our fish bowl today. Of course, we started with our usual "Hello Smith!" and Nick's "What's poppin'?" Then we went on to homework.

Homework: 
For Tomorrow - Have and example of Symphony
For Monday - Do Blog 7, your choice, (yes, I know Blog 6 is next) It is recommended that we do Blog 6
For May 7th - Read both Play and Empathy in A Whole New Mind

Then we talked about registration. Smith will not be there during arena scheduling, but there will be plenty of people to help us. Smith told us to be flexible with your schedule because you might not get what you want, but its ok if you don't. Also, on the yellow registration card, (the one we're turning in), it says that we are taking English 10. If you are going to continue in honors, Smith is going to sign the card saying that she is allowing you to go into American Lit. Honors, rather than going into English 10. After we talked about registration, we moved on to our fish bowl about Symphony. If you would like to see our blog conversation, its just below this post.

P.S. Just something to keep in mind, our Skype with Daniel Pink is next FRIDAY, May 4th. Be sure to let your  2nd hour teachers know that you will be gone.

Scribe Period 3 Wednesday 4/25/12

Happy Wednesday Everyone! Today was an informational day regarding scheduling for our sophomore year classes.

Important Dates to Remember:

Scribe 5th Hour on Tuesday April 24

Happy Tuesday! Hope you guys enjoyed sleeping in! The fast 23 minute period day began with the usual greeting of, "Hello everybody!" with a reply of, "Hello Smith!" Since today was ACT Testing for all Juniors, school did not start until 11:30 making each class period only 23 minutes long. We still managed to have a very productive day with Ms. Smith though because two sophomores from last year came in to talk about their experiences with TED Talks. Even though they were going to come in tomorrow (Wednesday), Freshmen Registration Advice for us is tomorrow so they came today! The main advice they gave everybody was,

• Be confident and passionate about our topic.

• Dress appropriately to what fits your topic (Example- If your talking about fitness it is okay to come in yoga pants, but if your talking about the homeless do not come in with a diamond or glitzy dress).
• Connect to the audience by asking them questions as well as making eye contact.
• You CAN have a note card so try righting your whole speech first and then put down on the note card your main points.
• Practice, practice, practice!
• Do not say you will never find a topic because no matter what there is always something you believe in.
• Be open withe audience!

Sooner then we thought possible the bell rang and it was time to go!

Period 3 Scribe 4/24/12

Today Olivia King, who was one of Smith's honors students last year, came in and talked about her TED talk and gave us advice for our TED talks.  Here are some notes from what she talked about:

-practice, especially in front of other people
-pick something that you can connect with, not what you think Smith would like
-TED talks show that it is possible to change the world
-watch lots of other TED talks
-its okay if your topic changes
-go with what you are going to benefit from the most
-time yourself, especially your slides
-it's not going to be perfect
-be satisfied with what you have
-write out your TED talk first (about 2 pages single spaced)
-impactful: changes your mind on what you are capable of
-work on it early and get the writing done as soon as possible, so you have time to practice
-if you have a topic but don't know where it will go, just work on it and it will lead you
-know what you are going to be saying and be comfortable with it, not memorized word for word
-use slides as background
-progression with slides
-talk to the audience, not the screen
-know where you are at with your slides, so you don't have to continually look back
-dress appropriate to your topic
-make sure that everything you are doing is relating back to your topic
-she just started to write, and didn't use a lot of structure at first
-hardest part of project was finding outside resources
-timing was also really hard

Olivia was very helpful and if you want more advice about your TED talk, Smith can give you some names of former students that you might be able to talk to.  The topic for your TED talk is due next Tuesday, May 1st.  Smith also linked former students' TED talks on the TED wiki, so if you would like to see Olivia's or other students' TED talks, look there.

Homework: Blog 5 is now due Thursday (this one should be on your own), read Symphony in AWNM for Thursday fishbowl, bring in an example of symphony for Friday, and there are only 19 MORE DAYS OF SCHOOL!!

Scribe 4/23/12 Period 5

Today we had a sub as Ms. Smith was out celebrating without us!(:
The agenda consisted of writing down homework in our planners, and then fishbowling Story. Great discussion today!! 

Homework:

* On our class blog there is an opportunity that was set up by Alison in period 3 to continue on with Story. Make sure to check it out. Note that it is not required, just a fun extra to enhance the idea of Story. 

Create a Mini-Saga

As we finished Story, Pink offers us the opportunity to write our own mini-saga's. What if Smith's honors classes all contributed to this post and made an awesome collection of mini-saga's? This isn't a requirement, so have some fun writing. Here are few tips:

1. Must be 50 words exactly
2. Tell a story, a real one, or make one up.
3. Post however many you would like!

Examples:

Phone Call

He dialed the number again. It was wrong number. That’s three times in a row!  Something was wrong. The number seemed OK. Just when he was about to give up, he figured out, he found that the last two digits were interchanged in his phone book. That explained it all!

The class, as always started off with a "hello Smith", but today, it was somewhat dismal because it's Friday. What else can you expect from students on a Friday?

Then immediately we went around the room and shared our examples of a story. Some were creative, some were odd, and others were original. Here are what kids brought in:

Before we did anything, Mrs. Smith had everyone google a man named Clay Shirky. We found that he is a good friend with Cory Doctrow, he has a blog, and that he is focused on how the internet is a social and economic force that people need to use to make a difference and change the world.

Then we watched his TED Talk.

Like we did in class you might need to watch it twice.

Homework:

1. The Blog for Clay Shirky's TED Talk is due Monday with all of the regular requirements.
2. Read "Story" in AWNM by Monday and be prepared for fishbowl on Monday, too.
3. Read "Seven Reasons Why Carrots and Sticks (Often) Don't Work" by Monday. (Annotation is optional)

Period 3 Scribe, April 18

Today we went over homework and went straight into the fishbowl over the Design chapter.

This insightful period began with the sharing of all our sentences from Daniel Pink's What's Your Sentence! All of our creative(and sometimes colorful) sentences were posted along the back wall for everyone to display. Feel free to stop by and peruse the gallery.

For the rest of the class period we started working on the reading the new packet The Rise and Fall of Motivation 2.0 or beginning the blog post for the second Ted Talk. This one is your choice! A reccomended list is on Mrs. Smith's webpage and many more can be accessed on Ted.com. The grades for the first blog post will be put in as soon as Smith can get around to it, so be sure to check Infinate Campus. If you feel you deserve more points on your post or want to disuss anything about it meet up with Smith to come to a consensus. The other big point of the day is for anyone who has a vision or something to help the school should aply for the LPS comittee board.

Get ready for another great day is period 5 English!

Period 5 Scribe, April 14

Happy Friday! Today started out like normal by going over homework. There are quite a few things to do over the weekend, starting with "What's Your Sentence?"which is due Monday. By Wednesday, everybody needs to have read the Design section of AWNM. Mrs. Smith wants us to bring in questions as well as an example of design (like a picture). We also need to read the " The Puzzling Puzzles of Harry Harlow and Edward Deci" and complete a blog post after watching Sir Ken Robinson's Ted Talk. 


We then discussed the expectations for our blog posts. The basic requirements are to be respectful and thoughtful, discuss the speakers effectiveness and purpose and to talk about the main idea. It also needs to discuss the use of examples and expanding on the ideas. We looked back at Sarah Kay's speech for an example. If you were to write about her Ted talk, you could talk about things like her enthusiasm or her organization. 


 Afterwords we watched Sir Ken Robinson's Ted Talk and took notes. We were then given the rest of the time to work on reading or our blog posts.

Thursday, April 12 Period 3

Today was a very exciting and informative day in Third Hour Honors English. It started out like any other day first with the announcements, and then with the usual greeting. Then Smith gave the floor to Mrs. Brock who came in to discuss our personality type tests that we took on Naviance. She explained first what Extraversion and Introversion meant, then moved on to Sensing and iNtuition, Thinking and Feeling, and finally Judging and Perceiving.

• Extraverts gain energy from outside themselves, whereas Intoverts gain energy from within themselves. More on extraversion versus introversion.
• Sensing involves the use of and focus on one's five senses, and iNtuition focuses more on impressions, meanings and patterns. More on sensing versus intuition. 
• Thinking people use principles or truths to make decisions, and Feeling people pay more attention to how decisions will affect those involved. More on thinking versus feeling.
• Judging people use their decision making tendencies (Thinking or Feeling) in everyday life, as compared to Perceiving people use their observation tendencies (Sensing or Intuition) in everyday life. More on judging versus perceiving.

The wonderful information that Mrs. Brock gave us today helped us to determine whether our tests were valid or not. Many in class (like myself), felt their tests were spot on. However, others were still undecided about where they stood.

Scribe 5th hour Wednesday April 11, 2012

Today we had an interesting day with Mr. Fisch leading an open discussion. We had an engaging conversation around technology, especially the topics of eee’s vs. laptops and bringing your own laptops. Personally, I’m waiting for the Google Glasses. Most of us felt that eee’s are inconvenient, small, and hard to use. As far as bringing your own laptops, many of us do not feel comfortable with our personal laptops being brought to school.

Also, we discussed our thoughts of the first section of A Whole New Mind. Some students shared that they found it rather tedious. Ms. Smith pointed out that what we found repetitive is actually an effective way of speaking that could convince people of a point. This is something to consider while working on our TED talks.

Wednesday April 11 Period 3

Hello everybody! Today we started out by listening to the Arapahoe announcements. Surprisingly we didn’t say “Hello Smith!” I think everybody is starting to get ready for summer. After the announcements we went over our homework and agenda and then started our discussion with Mr. Fisch. If you haven’t read over his questions, here it is. That is what we talked about with him, and it may possibly change how we learn in the future so check out his questions.

Homework: Read Drive excerpt "What's Your Sentence," read the chapter Design in A Whole New Mind, and take the Naviance personality quiz if you haven't taken it yet.

Tuesday April 10 SCRIBE

Homework: Karl Fisch discussion questions, read "Design" chapter in AWNM (due April 18th), whats your sentence? brain tests (linked on the agenda) and the naviance personality tests!

After going over the homework for tonight, we dove straight into the remaining Romeo and Juliet scenes. First up were Hunter(Friar Lawrence) Jeremy(Romeo) and Cole(Juliet). Great job guys!

Next, Zoe, Emily H, Ellen, Sarah and Mackenzie came in dresses in 80s style workout clothes. Hilarious and well done!!!

Moving quickly to AWNM, Smith asked us what we noticed while watching the "If I had a daughter" TED Talk. The thoughts shared were:

-get personally invested

-feel the passion for the topic

-be organized, systematic and build upon ideas

-great speeches come from incredible writing

-PREPARE YOURSELF

Take you time with evolving your speech- Smith will gladly help you in any she can.

As a way to start formatting the beginning of your speech, think about creating an "Intro Paragraph."

Grabber could be pictures, video... a song! Also remember that what you say first, people pay the most attention to.

We ended class with a great fishbowl discussion (check out the lower part of the blog for the cover-it-live)!

Tuesday Scribing Fun!

The usual chant of “Hello Everyone” was quickly followed by “Hello Smith”. Continuing on to what our homework is…

1) What’s your sentence? Due Monday 4/16

Then we got a new seating chart! The last one for this year… weird!

Talked about the TED talk we watched the other day and some of the strategies she used.

1) She was positive and lively when she talked (upbeat)

2) Was interactive with the audience: told jokes and “three things that everyone knows” short thinking task with small visuals.

3) Opened with a poem and you didn’t know till later, caught you off guard and was able to flow into her speech seamlessly.

4) She was so passionate, very expressive and personal.

5) She let the audience interpret her words.

You will want to write your speech like an essay: Attention getter, background info, thesis, three points, and a solid, wrap up conclusion. She made a full circle with her words. “What is going to make the biggest impact right away” –Smith

We moved on to Fishbowling Non-fiction and how to do that.

1) Important to use text to text and text to world and text to self. Make CONNECTIONS!!

2) Always refer back to your book while in fishbowl. “Let’s all go to page…”

3) Watch the news for once. Own your learning! Bring outside learning sources to contribute.
