Smith 3 Scribe 2/2

Everyone walked into to class dreaming of a snow day tomorrow...we will see. The greeting engraved in our brains was said and we started of the class with grammar. Today was capitalization, punctuation, and diagramming. TOMORROW IS OUR GRAMMAR TEST!!!!!!
We then pulled ourselves away from the technology world and began the first day of our letter writing challenge. After ten minutes of writing we turned our letters into Mrs. Smith to mail, and if we were not finished then we could mail it at home.
The rest of the class was spent discussing our abnormal essay (it is online!!!). We first reviewed the rubric (all of it is worth 225 points) and then Mrs. Smith went over the details and formation of the essay. The attention grabber and background info part of the introduction do not have to be just words. They can be a video or some type of link. Then you have to answer 3 questions in the thesis: what has society learned from the texts, what hasn't society learned from society, and where is society going? It is required that you have a separate body paragraph for each question. The first 2 need 4 quotes (advanced) from Little Brother and 1984, but you could also include a modern example. The last body paragraph allows a lot more freedom with what your support is. It could be a video, an interview, a link, a picture, etc. The conclusion is similar to the introduction. You need to take a position and prove it. Don''t forget the citations!!! This whole essay a website so you can divide it up however you want. It is all up to you! Here are some ideas for what we have learned and what we haven't learned.
Learned:
Technology can have + or - effects (make sure you take a side)
Overly powerful government=threat to freedom
Technology meant for good but abused
Be wary of conformity
Value of Freedom
Value of Safety
Power in numbers
Gov. disregard for privacy
Not learned:
Safety vs. Privacy
Not smarter than technology
Living in fear- gives people and gov. more power
Truth vs. Government ‘truth’
Trust (who to trust)
Cost of safety/freedom
Slippery Slope of Power
Homework: CSAP packet, thesis statement and outline of paper
Have a great night!!!!

Scribe for Wednesday, Feb. 1

Hello class! Today started off with the usual greeting of “ Hello Smith!” Today we discussed many things including our essay, which we start writing tomorrow. We will be required to answer the questions, of what have we learned, what we haven't learned, and where are we going? It will be a wikified research paper, which means that we will be allowed to include all kind of different media into our projects! This could include videos, pictures, and any other kind of multimedia! we then went over some poetry devices, specifically figurative language! we went over flashback, foreshadowing, mood, tone, symbolism, personification, and hyperbole! After that we went over our daily grammar! The first sentence of “carla looked at herself in the mirror and recited the poem fire and ice” was made up of one independent clause, making it a simple sentence. The second sentence of “we saw a midsummer nights dream at the buell theater after we saw the play at ahs” was made up of one independent clause and on dependent clause. This would make this sentence a complex sentence. We then had a fishbowl over chapters 18 up through the epilogue. Some of the topics we covered were that if the DHS came back, would the people allow them to return to power, or would they be kicked out, because they had already done so much damage to the people?

HOMEWORK: brainstorm some ideas for our essay, bring writing materials for tomorrow’s letter writing, and our CSAP packet.

Smith 3 Scribe 2/1

Hello class!!! Did you all enjoy sleeping in? I sure did! The first topic of discussion was our wiki essay. You are required to address what have we learned, what haven't we learned, and where are we going? Mrs. Smith is allowing us a week in class to work on, February 14 being the last in class work day and then the essay's due date is February 21. The complete requirements have not been reviewed, but Mrs. Smith briefly explained that for the first two body paragraphs (have learned and haven't learned) you need 4 quotes: 2 from 1984 and 2 from Little Brother. The last body paragraph (where are we going) is going to be supported by media evidence (links, audio, video, etc.). Remember that this electronic paper is worth 200 points. Part of your homework is to brainstorm ideas for the body paragraphs. It is up to you how to complete this task; an outline or maybe just finding quotes. If you are having some trouble coming up with some ideas, here is the link from or in class discussion of these topics. http://smith9h1112.blogspot.com/2012/01/january-19-2012.html. We will also go over our brainstorming in class!
Next on the schedule was tips for our CSAP packet. This week the packet deals with poetry. Here are some hints!!!
Figurative Language
  • Literal: exact meaning of a word
  • Figurative: non-literal meaning (has to be interpreted)
  • Figurative language: using words and phrases in an unusual way when they don't mean exactly what they say. Authors use figurative language to give their writing more color and power.
  • Example of figurative language: similes and metaphors
  • Authors may use these! Do you know what they are?
 Foreshadowing
Flashback
Symbolism
Personification
Hyperbole
Tone
Mood
For question 38, use a line from the poem, not a sentence. State the line, effect, and then explain why.
Being Wednesday, for grammar we worked on clauses and sentence types. The first sentence contained a single independent clause therefore making it a simple sentence. The second sentence had an independent clause and a dependent clause which means it is a complex sentence.
Unfortunately there was not a lot of time for fishbowl, but one of the main topics discussed in the short time was the future of the generation that 9/11 didn't truly affect.
Homework: brainstorm essay, CSAP packet, bring letter writing materials for tomorrow

Period 5 2/1/2012

Happy PLC! The class kicked off with the ordinary “Hello everyone!” “Hello Smith” with Nick saying his usual “What’s poppin’?” Then we cleared up the C11 hallway because someone took down all the locker tags and Smith wanted us to be good Warriors. We discussed homework and asked questions about the wikified research papers. Smith reminded us that we wouldn’t be using Wikispaces, because Google sites are the real deal. iWeb is another alternative solution for Mac people, but it is being discontinued later this year. Then started grammar.
We identified sentence types and clauses. Sentence one was a simple sentence and the 2nd sentence began with an independent clause and ended with a dependent clause, making it a complex sentence. Then we did CSAP.
On 38, write the line then say “This quote affects the reader because.” Smith is very serious about getting a why response. Then we fishbowled. (http://smith9h1112.blogspot.com/)
